THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SENATE PRESIDENT IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA


The Senate President is the presiding officer of the Senate, which is the upper chamber of the National Assembly of Nigeria. The Senate President is elected by the members of the Senate and serves a four-year term.

The Senate President has a number of responsibilities, including:

* Presiding over the Senate and its committees

* Ensuring that the Senate follows the rules of procedure

* Appointing members to committees

* Scheduling votes and debates

* Signing bills into law

* Representing the Senate at official functions

The Senate President is also third in line to succeed the President of Nigeria, after the Vice President and the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Here are some of the key responsibilities of the Senate President:

(1.) Preside over the Senate:

The Senate President is responsible for presiding over the Senate and its committees. This includes calling the Senate to order, recognizing speakers, and maintaining order during debates.

(2.) Ensuring that the Senate follows the rules of procedure:

The Senate President is responsible for ensuring that the Senate follows its rules of procedure. This includes ensuring that all senators have an opportunity to speak, that votes are conducted fairly, and that the Senate's decisions are made in accordance with the law.

(3.) Appointing members to committees:

The Senate President is responsible for appointing members to committees. This includes appointing the chairs of committees, as well as the members of each committee.

(4.) Scheduling votes and debates:

The Senate President is responsible for scheduling votes and debates on bills and other matters before the Senate. This includes determining when votes will be held, as well as how long each debate will last.

(6.) Representing the Senate at official functions: 

The Senate President is responsible for representing the Senate at official functions. This includes attending events with foreign dignitaries, as well as delivering speeches on behalf of the Senate.
