HOW TO PROTECT YOUR NIN: DETECT AND REMOVE UNAUTHORIZED SIMs LINKED TO YOUR IDENTITY

1. NCC’s Mandate on SIM and NIN Linkage

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has made it compulsory for all mobile phone users in Nigeria to personally register their SIM cards and link them to their National Identification Number (NIN). This policy ensures that every line can be traced to its rightful owner.

2. The Purpose of the Policy

This regulation was introduced to curb illegal use of phone lines. Many criminal activities are carried out using anonymous phone lines, so this system helps to eliminate the ability to use SIM cards anonymously and ensures accountability.

3. The User’s Responsibility

Therefore, when you go to a SIM registration or update center, you must make sure that only your own phone number(s) are registered with your NIN. You must not allow or unknowingly allow other lines to be linked to your identity.

4. The Risk of Fraudulent Practices

There are increasing reports that some corrupt registration agents take advantage of people's NINs during the registration process. These dishonest agents may use a person’s NIN to register other SIM cards and then sell them to criminals at high prices.

5. How to Know If Your NIN Has Been Compromised

This brings us to a very important question: How can you know whether or not other phone numbers have been linked to your NIN without your consent?

*6. The Solution – Use 996#

After registering or updating your SIM card, you can check which numbers are linked to your NIN by simply dialing *996# on your mobile phone. This is a code designed to help users verify the numbers associated with their NIN.

*7. What to Do After Dialing 996#

When you dial *996#, you will be presented with a menu. From the options given, choose one like "View NIN Status" or "View Linked Numbers." This will allow you to see all the phone numbers linked to your NIN.

8. If You Notice an Unknown Number

If you find that there are phone numbers listed that you do not recognize or authorize, then it is clear that your NIN has been used fraudulently. It is critical to act immediately in such a case.

9. If All Linked Numbers Are Yours

However, if all the numbers shown are yours and you recognize them, then give thanks to God and appreciate the registration officer for doing their job correctly and honestly.

10. Final Advice – Stay Vigilant

To protect yourself from this type of identity misuse, dial *996# today to verify the numbers linked to your NIN. If you find any unfamiliar numbers, visit a SIM registration center immediately to have them removed. May Allah protect us all from fraud and harm. Ameen.
